Santa Maria BBQ BookletAs reported by KSBY-TV and others, a local Santa Maria BBQ specialist is making news by being chosen to cook for the Rose Bowl’s VIP tailgate party on New Year’s Day.

Billy and Sue Ruiz, proprietors of Cowboy Flavor catering company in Los Alamos, will serve their barbecue fare at the private tailgate village reserved for around 2,000 employees and guests of ESPN, PrimeSports, float owners, sponsors, television network executives and other VIPs. Each year the village shines with a theme, and this year it is “Sports Bar.” Cowboy Flavor will provide the barbecued meat for the village while an assortment of specialty food trucks will offer gourmet side dishes and desserts.

Billy is famed for his big personality and colorful look, which includes a memorable handlebar mustache. Followers of this blog will recognize Billy as the cover model for our Santa Maria Style Barbecue booklet (pictured here) and as an earlier featured interviewee in our ongoing “3 Questions” interview series.

“We are thrilled to be selected to take Santa Maria Style Barbecue to the Rose Bowl and Parade of Roses, two of the oldest and most prestigious events celebrating the New Year,” says Billy, who along with Sue has been operating his catering company for more than 30 years. “We want to go down there and score a touchdown for the Central Coast and Santa Maria Style Barbecue.”

Thanks to Billy and Sue for getting Santa Maria BBQ off to such a sizzling start in 2013!
