Pat the Plover Keeps a Bird’s Eye View on Wine Country

The Western Snowy Plover may be a vulnerable bird on the Central Coast, but not Pat.

While the Santa Maria Valley’s usual guests have been safely social distancing at home, Pat has spread his flappers and is keeping an eye on the vineyards, restaurants, beaches, and more while our residents and guests stay sheltered. Peel the gourd of a luffa? Check. Barbecue over bugs? Yes, please. Sip wine off the vine? Cheers to that. His plover patrol is in full swing.

Pat knows what’s really important – wine.

Pat has flexed his agricultural knowledge, or lack thereof, in the fields.

He’s also jumped on all the cool quarantine trends, like the bread-baking obsession.

Not all the birds share Pat’s enthusiasm, though.

He’s expanded his palate with local cuisine…

…and caught up with other local wildlife (butterflies, beware).

“When you’re a plover, every hour is happy hour.”

Pat even partook in local-favorite seasonal activities, like berry picking! Although, he was mostly in it for the puns.

He had some #selfie time…

…and “hopped” to the local breweries to do a little quality control. For research purposes, of course!

Name a plover with more headwear, we dare you.

Peeling the gourd off a luffa can’t be easy without thumbs.

Pat kept count of the barrels, too.

It can’t always be fun and games, and even plovers get stuck with babysitting duty.

When all is said and done, Pat did an excellent job keep a watchful eye and a caring wing on the comings and goings of Santa Maria Valley. Soon, guests will begin to return to the region, so Pat will get a much-deserved break. When you’re ready to come visit us again, be sure to swing by the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes to try and catch a glimpse of Pat and his whole Plover family.
