Twitchell Reservoir
Twitchell Reservoir, formed by the Twitchell Dam on the Cuyama River, is a scenic and tranquil spot for birdwatching and enjoying nature. Constructed in the late 1950s as part of the Santa Maria Project, the reservoir plays a vital role in recharging the Santa Maria Valley groundwater basin and providing flood protection. Operated by the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District, it has also been trapping sediments from the watershed, with ongoing management to maintain its safety and longevity. Beyond its engineering significance, the reservoir offers visitors a peaceful setting to connect with the natural beauty of the region.
