On this Veteran’s Day weekend, our local heroes enjoyed a true Santa Maria Style “Thank You,” courtesy of a local family and more than 200 volunteers.

Indeed, what better way to honor local veterans than with an abundance of local flavor via Santa Maria BBQ? That’s just what local resident Michael Clayton, his wife and two sons did on Sunday, spearheading a Veterans Day Barbecue at the Santa Maria Veterans Hall. The festivities included live music, a car show and military flyover.

They Clayton family started the event 12 years ago. Click here for a video report on yesterday’s event on KSBY.com (and look at those Santa Maria pinquito beans!).

Says Mr. Clayton, “We have to remember that we can’t be standing here doing what we’re doing if it wasn’t for the veterans. We can’t be having our way of life if the veterans didn’t do their job to give us a shot at freedom and choice.”

Thanks to our veterans, active military, the Clayton family and the volunteers for stepping up for our country. This event is just another example of how Santa Maria lives up to its status as an official “All-America” city.
