It is located approximately 3.5 hours north of Los Angeles, 1.5 hours north of Santa Barbara, 4 hours south of the Bay Area, and 20 minutes from Pismo State Beach. You can reach Santa Maria via Highway 101, Highway 1, and Highway 166. Getting here by plane The Santa Maria Public Airport (SMX) and United Airlines announced new routes that will help connect Santa Maria and the entire Central Coast to three major travel hubs — Denver, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The daily, nonstop routes will begin operation on June 4, 2020. Flights 5506 and 5609 will travel between Santa Maria and Denver, flights 5879 and 5587 will travel between Santa Maria and Los Angeles, and flights 5255 and 5541 will travel between Santa Maria and San Francisco. These flights will use United Express CRJ-200 jets, which seat 50 passengers. Currently, SMX offers just one regular route — Santa Maria to Las Vegas via Allegiant Air. This new service offers benefits to Central Coast locals and national or international travelers looking to experience the exquisite food, wine and recreation only found on the Central Coast. These flights mark the 20th airport in California served by United Airlines. Santa Maria is now one of the fastest growing cities on the Central Coast, and high demand from business and leisure travelers alike made the addition of more flights essential. Although these routes don’t begin until June 4, tickets are available for purchase now on United.com.
