Bizarre Foods Showcases Barbecue Done the Santa Maria Valley Way

Larry Tanner, Jerry Lloyd, Carol Sorenson, Willie Moore and Tom Sartain from the Santa Maria Elks Lodge showed Andrew Zimmern how Santa Maria-style barbecue is the best beef ever.

On March 8, 2017, the Cruising the Pacific Coast Highway episode premiered on Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern on the Travel Channel.

The Santa Maria Elks Lodge grill masters featured the 150-year old barbecue tradition. “We prepared a full Santa Maria-style meal for them, from start to finish,” said Ike Simas of the Santa Maria Elks Lodge, and 3rd generation grill master. “The crew taped for about five hours and they expressed how unique our way of barbecuing here is. Andrew Zimmern seemed amazed at the way we cut and serve it. Their crew worked pretty doggone hard taking photos and asking questions.”

Zimmern noted that the Santa Maria Elks Lodge also raised more than $250,000 in 2016 in charitable donations for the Santa Maria Valley community.

“Best Beef Ever,” said Zimmern on his Instagram post about Santa Maria-style barbecue.

In this episode, Zimmern cruised up the most scenic highway in America on a food-sampling adventure. His journey also took him hagfish fishing in the Pacific, eating the slimy reproductive organs of sea urchins and foraging for juicy gooseneck barnacles.
