Founded in 2010, Kitá Wines is a small, premium winery located in the Santa Ynez Valley within the Santa Barbara County AVA (American Viticultural Area). The word “Kitá” means “Our Valley Oak” in the Santa Ynez Chumash native language of Samala. Like the valley oak, their wine highlights the gifts from Mother Earth and embodies the spirit of the Santa Ynez Valley. Kitá Wines focuses on respecting the balance of soil, climate, location and taste. With a total case production of approximately 2,000 cases, they are crafted using sustainable methods and a blend of old world and new world winemaking techniques. The Kitá Wines Tasting Room in Lompoc is available for private tastings by appointment. From Sauvignon Blanc to Grenache Rosé, winemaker Tara Gomez has a fascination for science and the aromas of wine. In 1998, she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Enology making her one of two women graduating with that emphasis that year. A member of the Santa Ynez Band of Indians, Tara was always mesmerized with the land and vineyards. She worked on several wineries in the Valley and soon after, she traveled to Europe to perfect her winemaking skills. There, she blended her new world techniques with old-world traditions to create her unique winemaking styles of today. Tara’s dream of giving back to her tribe came true in 2010 when her tribe purchased a vineyard. They named her the head winemaker and she’s been making truly remarkable wines ever since. As a dedication and commitment to her culture, she tries to give back to the land through sustainability and thus create elegant, balanced wines with minimal input.
